Arabesque No. 1 opened a series of quilts inspired by the geometric complexity of Islamic tile work. Pieced entirely in cotton batiks, the quilt’s interlocking pattern grew out of an unexpected source — a tile advertisement glimpsed in Architectural Digest. Machine piecing and quilting bring precision to the design’s repeating geometry, a technical challenge Julie returns to throughout the Arabesques series. As the first piece in the series, it marks the beginning of her ongoing exploration of pattern, symmetry, and the discipline of piecework.
